Three common ways to split rent

Equal. Divide the rent by the number of people. It is the simplest, and it is fair when rooms are close in size and quality.

By room size. Each person pays in proportion to the size of their private room. Shared areas are left out, since everyone uses them equally.

By income. Each person pays in proportion to what they earn. This keeps the burden similar when roommates earn very different amounts, but it needs everyone to be comfortable sharing that number.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fairest way to split rent between roommates?

There is no single answer. An equal split is simplest when rooms are similar. If rooms differ a lot, splitting by room size (or adjusting for a private bathroom or better light) is common. Some households split by income so the burden is proportional. What matters most is that everyone agrees before signing the lease.

How is the rent split by room size calculated?

Each person pays the total rent multiplied by their room size divided by the combined size of all the rooms. For example, in a $2,400 rent split across rooms of 180, 140 and 100 square feet, the shares are $1,028.57, $800.00 and $571.43.

Should shared spaces count?

Shared spaces such as the kitchen and living room benefit everyone equally, so they are usually left out of the room-size calculation. The rent is divided by private room size only.
